Designer Q & A: Jenny Galluzzo of Mayer

Former journalist Jenny Galluzzo recently traded in the camera and microphone for fabulous fashion. Galluzzo founded Mayer, a chic line of vintage inspired caftan dresses and tops, which retail between $300 and $330. The designs are based on vintage pieces Galluzzo’s grandmother collected in the 1970s on her global jaunts. Perfect for your holiday travel plans, these pieces also make great gifts for stylish friends. Glam checked in with Galluzzo to chat about her vacation essentials, getaway plans, cheap thrills and extravagant splurges. ~Nola Weinstein

What are your travel essentials?
Multiple chargers, Mayer dresses, sunglasses, flip-flops, a cashmere wrap, digital camera, lip balm and Splenda.

Where will you be traveling this winter?

I am going to Cabo in January and I have never been there so I am really looking forward to relaxing and eating tacos and watching my husband surf. For my next adventure I am dying to go to Sicily and drive across the island exploring ancient ruins, beautiful towns and eating and drinking a lot!

Last Splurge:
I recently bought a May de Chelly one-of-a-kind enormous gold ring at Roseark in Los Angeles—an early anniversary present.

Cheap Thrills:
Going to the movies and treating myself to popcorn and fountain soda, a great eBay find, taking a walk on a beach with my dog.

What five items can you not live without?
-Dior Show Black Mascara
-Personalized stationery from Sesame Letterpress
-Helen Ficalora gold horseshoe medallion for good luck
-1970’s men’s Rolex watch my husband bought me for my birthday when we were dating
-Straw lifeguard hats for the beach

What designers inspire/influence you?
Diane von Furstenberg is the epitome of strong, independent femininity. I think Karl Lagerfeld is fascinating as a human and a genius as a designer. Vintage Zandra Rhodes from the 1970’s is a touchstone for Mayer–the styles are glamorous, whimsical yet sophisticated.

What should a woman wear with your pieces?
A woman should wear confidence and their own independent spirit. The pieces I design are meant to be flexible and personalized. They work just as well with leggings and boots in the fall and flip-flops and a bathing suit in the summer. I think the best way to wear Mayer is to use the dresses and tops as a canvas—you can add a turban and go all Talitha Getty or metal and chain accessories and turn the same dress into an urban-glam look.
